Porphyry is an igneous rock consisting of large grained crystals such as feldspar or quartz dispersed in a fine grained matrix. Porphyry deposits are formed when a column of rising magma is cooled in two stages.
- Stage 1: The magma is cooled slowly deep in the crust, creating the large crystal grains visible to the naked eye.
- Stage 2: The magma is cooled rapidly at relatively shallow depth or as it erupts creating small grains that are usually invisible to the unaided eye.
Used since ancient times, Porphyry’s colours are never uniform as the porphyritic rocks come from different quarries and gives this product its natural charm. The natural cleft red brown porphyry variety features hues of deep red, dark brown, deep purple, rust colour with specks, this cleft surface being slightly rough and characterized by a micro porosity of 1-2%.
